Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will

A. Know and understand

Demonstrate Advanced knowledge and understanding of the nature of academic writing and communication, including the need for academic integrity

B. Be able to

1. Analyse the features and requirements of academic writing and communication

2. Exhibit competency in research and communication skills

3. Assess evidence-based perspectives on academic writing and communication

C. Be in a position to

Apply appropriate knowledge and Critical thinking skills and perspectives from ‘Academic Writing and Communication’ to tertiary level Christian Studies

Content

  1. Study skills: time management, organisation, note taking and exam preparation
  2. Academic writing: structure, referencing, editing, with a focus on the student’s field of study
  3. Critical thinking/logic and reasoning: evaluating and constructing logical arguments as related to aspects the student’s field of study
  4. Reading and research skills: summarising and paraphrasing, avoiding plagiarism, locating resources (including electronic)
  5. English for academic purposes including specific disciplines (theology, linguistics and translation): mechanics and vocabulary
