Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will

A. Know and understand

1. Demonstrate Advanced knowledge and understanding of, and the research underlying, the philosophy of research and selected research methodologies.

B. Be able to

1. Examine the methodologies used in text based and/or ministry practice fields of study.

2. Review the research principles and practices and ethical dimensions underlying selected text based and/or ministry practice Christian scholarship.

3. Formulate an integrated research proposal in order to perform Advanced research.

C. Be in a position to

Developing Research-Aware perspectives on Advanced research methodologies and apply them to Christian texts and issues, and/or ministry practice as a reflective practitioner.

    3. Learning to use the tools and access the sources for efficient research
    4. Qualitative and quantitative research: the importance of methodology

    1. Formulating a proposal: defining the topic; setting realistic, achievable goals; benefits
    2. Safeguards in ‘human subject research’: the evidence necessary for project approval by an ethics committee; ethics protocols for research involving human subjects
    3. Final form of the thesis/project: revision of style and accuracy of writing; consistency in use of conventions; supervisor’s final approval; research writing for critique and publication.
