On successful completion of this unit, students will

A. Know and understand

1. Demonstrate Specialised knowledge and understanding of, and research principles and methods used in investigating, the traditions and practices of Christian spirituality

B. Be able to

1. Evaluate Specialised methods and issues in the investigation of the traditions and practices of Christian spirituality
2. Integrate diverse scholarship and ministry experience in devising approaches to spiritual disciplines and practices
3. Present independent Research-Driven perspectives to Assess the “health” of spirituality of personal life and Christian community

C. Be in a position to

1. Applying research-based perspectives and skills from ‘Christian Spirituality: Traditions and Practices’ for ministry practice and Christian living as a reflective practitioner

Content

  1. The foundation and frameworks of Christian spirituality.
  2. Traditions and models of Christian Spirituality: Desert fathers, Monastic life, Orthodox spirituality, Mendicant spirituality, Lutheran spirituality, Ignatian spirituality, Reform spirituality, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, Anglican spirituality, Wesleyan spirituality, Evangelical spirituality and Chinese Christian traditions (1800-1949).
  3. Practices of Spiritual disciplines: Spiritual journey, Discipline of solitude and silence, Lecito divina, Praying with an icon, Discipline of simplicity, Devotional use of catechism, Discipline of self-examination, Discipline of faithfulness in our calling, Discipline of living in the presence of God, Praying the office, Discipline of accountable discipleship, and Discipline of meditation.
