Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will

A. Know and understand

Demonstrate Developing knowledge and understanding of the principles of leadership and management, including the methods and standards of professional, safe and ethical practice 

B. Be able to

1. Identify biblical principles and patterns of leadership

2. Analyse the dynamics and processes of leading and managing Christian institutions

3. Demonstrate skill in Christian leadership and management

4. Present Analytical evidence-based perspectives on the principles of leadership and management

C. Be in a position to

1. Applying perspectives and skills from ‘Principles of Leadership and Management’ to contemporary Christian life and ministry contexts

Content

Section A: Principles of Christian Leadership (40%)

  1. Biblical principles and patterns of leadership.
  2. Leadership qualities; gifts and abilities; the process of leadership development.
  3. Operating as a leader: appropriate styles for different situations and people; mentoring, delegating, motivating, communicating.
  4. Power, authority, responsibility and influence.

Section B: Managing Christian Institutions (40%)

  1. Establishing purpose, objectives, philosophy of ministry, goals, plans, administration, feedback and problem-solving.
  2. Principles of organisation: alternative structures, job-descriptions, decision-making, committees, accountability, time-management.
  3. Managing conflict and implementing change.
  4. Financial management; Christian principles in using money, understanding accounts, budgeting, accountability.
  5. Institutional life-cycles and aging; bureaucracy and devitalisation.

Section C: Field Work (20%)

  1. At least 8 hours under the guidance of a Christian in a significant management position, observing and reflecting upon the principles and processes of management in operation.
  2. Candidates undertake a personal evaluation, under supervision, of their own strengths and weaknesses in leadership; it may be in written or oral form.
